Wood Shutters

CHECKLIST FOR PURCHASING WOOD SHUTTERS

If you are in the market for wood shutters, do your research.  The highest quality wood shutters will have the following features. Ask the following questions when looking at wood shutters. If you can mark yes for each subject, you have found an exceptionally high-quality wood shutter.

Reinforced Engineered Stiles?

Perhaps the biggest factor in a shutter’s ability to resist warping, twisting, cupping, or bowing, is the strength and stability of its stiles (the vertical end pieces of a shutter, known as the heart of a shutter).  Our stiles are composed of reinforced engineered wood – several wood veneers are layered and bonded together under extreme heat and pressure, producing stiles that are exceptionally durable, solid, and uniform throughout.  Don’t settle for stiles that are not composed of engineered wood. Stiles form the support system for the entire shutter and their strength should not be compromised.

Quarter Sawn Louvers?

Quarter sawn wood is used in our shutter louvers.  Each log is quartered, and the louver wood is harvested perpendicular to the grain.  Compared to flat sawn wood, quarter sawn wood is stronger and more stable, being much less susceptible to bowing, warping, and cupping.  The beauty of quarter sawn wood is unmatched as well, with its grain being far more consistent and straight lined than plain sawn wood.

Prescription Conditioned Wood?

Our wood shutters have been prescription conditioned, a patented drying process based on regional moisture levels.  Instead of drying all harvested wood quickly and collectively, the wood in our shutters is separated into climate zones according to the destinations where the shutters will be installed.  The wood in each group is then dried until it reaches the optimal moisture level for each destination. This re-climatization process guards against swelling, shrinking and warping after the shutter has been hung in our customers’ homes.

Mortise and Tenon Joinery?

Mortise and tenon joinery is a hallmark of fine furniture.  Solid joinery is essential to prolonging a shutter’s life and stability.  Mortise and tenon joints resist significant racking forces and other stress, whereas those same forces may cause less solid joints, such as butt joints utilizing dowels, or dovetail joints, to break, causing the shutter to fail.

A Quality Finish with Extensive Paint and Stain Choices?

Don’t settle for a shutter with a cheap rough finish or pre-painted components.  Our wood shutters have a high-quality furniture grade finish, with a fine coat of paint or stain applied six times.  To prevent fading, the finish is UV cured. Regarding color options, if you cannot find a suitable color among our standard 21 paints and 33 stains, we offer custom color matching to any paint or stain you intend to incorporate into your décor.

Stainless Steel Staples?

Nothing can be more frustrating to a shutter owner than dealing with failing staples over time.  Our shutter staples are the most reliable in the industry. They are longer; utilize micro barb technology; and are attached at a precise optimal angle, with friction actuated adhesive to ensure they remain fastened to the louvers.  Being stainless, our staples resist rust and corrosion. Best of all, in the unlikely case that one of our shutter staples fails, we will replace the staple at no charge to you.

Recessed Magnets?

Our shutters incorporate recessed magnets.  Beautiful because they are undetectable, the embedded magnets ensure a tight closure, streamlined appearance, and superior light blocking.
